What is a default password?

Default passwords are the standard usernames and passwords that come pre-set on new devices like routers. Every device of the same model has identical default login credentials, making them easy targets for hackers.

Why change them?

You must change all default usernames and passwords immediately before using any device. This includes:

  • Routers and network equipment
  • Security systems
  • Any device handling customer data.

Additional security steps:

  • Remove or disable unused accounts
  • Change passwords when employees leave
  • Update credentials after any device reset (note: resetting returns devices to default settings).

Remember: Hackers know common default passwords. Changing them is your first line of defense against data theft.
